Launch of a NEW Personal Radiation Monitor (PRM100D)
In line with our Company mission of “Gilligan resource & support the safe practice of radiography in the NDT industry” Gilligan Engineering Services Ltd has launched the new PRM100D.
- Size approx. 48 x 26 x 80mm (W x H x L) suitable for either shirt or coverall pocket or worn on a belt.
- Weight 105g including battery and belt / pocket clip.
- Temperature range -10° C to +60° C.
The unit has two modes:
- Live Dose Mode – which will act as a simple handheld survey meter displaying 1 – 1000µSv/h
- Dose Accumulated Mode displayed in µSv. Hourly dose data up to a maximum of 240 hours can be stored in the internal memory for subsequent download if required using data logging software. This software can be purchased as an optional extra
- A discreet switch to toggle between live and dose mode is hidden in the battery compartment – eliminating accidental switching of modes
The unit also emits the following tones:
- A “beep” every 10µSv accrued incident dose provided that the average dose in the last 10 seconds is below 7.5µSv, an LED will also flash
- A “warble” every 10µSv accrued incident dose when the average dose in the last 10 seconds is above 7.5µSv, an LED will also flash. Warning events become more frequent at higher dose levels
Unlike some other Bleepers on the market the PRM100D is suitable for both X-ray and Gamma ray detection which is ideal for operators who use both methods of inspection.
The unit is entirely automatic and is powered by a CR2 3v Lithium cell giving approx. 1 years’ life – this may be reduced depending on frequency of use of the RS232 port and activity.

Nuvia Project
Gilligan Engineering Services are proud to have been selected by Nuvia UK to provide our GEN 2 Automated Windout system, with Siemens drive technology, operating with QSA Sentinel 880 Projectors.
Nuvia’s heritage dates back to the beginning of the UK nuclear industry and since then the business has grown to become a trusted provider of services to a range of UK and international clients. They have developed a reputation for safe, high-quality delivery of practical solutions to some of the world’s most complex challenges.
The Nuvia project was part of a wider project to build a New NDT facility at the BAE Systems Barrow in Furness facility. This facility has been constructed to manufacture the next generation of submarines to house our Nuclear deterrent.
The new facility included a machining facility and 3 NDT Rad bungers. This consisted of a smaller bunker with a comet x-ray system and a 25ft Automated Windout. The other 2 bays were larger and Gamma only. Each of these bays required 2 x 50Ft Automated Windout units.
This is the first multi-system project we have delivered which also incorporates UPS backup in the event of a main power failure and remote HMI control for 2 of the systems. These remote HMI units were required as the designed bays were too large for a 50Ft Teleflex system to be able to reach all areas in the bay. We therefore designed the remote HMI system which allows 2 x 50Ft Teleflex system to be positioned at each end of the bay to provide full coverage.
The Remote HMI unit allows the operator to operate both systems from the same control point. The Siemens control technology utilised in our core design enabled simple integration of the remote HMI control units and the Nuvia Safety system.
Gilligan are proud to have been selected to deliver a vital part of this nationally important project.

Working with Minton Treharne and Davies
Gilligan Engineering Services are proud to have been selected by Minton Treharne and Davies to provide our GEN 2 Automated Windout system, with Siemens drive technology, operating with a Gilligan Viking VI projector.
This project was particularly unique as the Windout Motor assembly need to be mounted above the roof of the Enclosure and 20m away from the control box. The GEN2 Automated windout system, however, comes complete with an independent windout motor assembly and various options regarding cable lengths. This is a departure from the previous system which incorporated the motor gearbox in the control panel.
The system was also integrated with a Euroteck safety systems. The Gen2 Automated windout offers different interface options with other manufacturers safety systems regarding communications between the 2 systems.
During the installation process we were proud to see the work undertaken by Minton Treharne and Davies to combat the COVID-19 epidemic. Their laboratory facilities were busy processing test swabs to help the national fight against COVID-19
The Minton Treharne & Davies Group provide scientific consultancy, surveying and testing services to a worldwide client base from our offices in the UK, USA and Asia.
